WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – It had been nearly a year since the last time the University at Buffalo men's tennis team took the court, but the Bulls had a successful return on Saturday as the Bulls defeated St. Francis (PA) 7-0 in their 2021 season opener.
The Bulls began with a solid performance in doubles. Simon Wibler and Bjoern Petersen had a 6-2 win at second doubles and the pair of freshmen Tom Owen and Finn Macnamara won 6-2 at third doubles. The veteran duo of Valdemar Holm and Matthew Johnson completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at one.
UB won all six of the singles matches in straight sets. Wibler opened up the scoring with a 6-2, 6-0 win at six and Holm won his contest 6-0, 6-0 at three. Johnson clinched the match for the Bulls as he won 6-2, 6-1 at second singles.
Owen won at fourth singles 6-2, 6-4 and Petersen picked up the victory at first singles, 6-2, 6-3. Macnamara finished off the sweep with a 6-3, 7-5 win at five. For all three of these individuals, this was their first singles win as a Bull.
"I first want to thank the University and our administration for doing everything possible to allow us to play today," said head coach Lee Nickell. "It felt great to be back out on the court with this group of guys and I think you were able to see that excitement in the way we played this afternoon."
Buffalo will continue a three-match homestand on Friday when the Bulls host Cleveland State beginning at 2:30 pm.
