PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) got back to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon as they blanked the Drexel Dragons on the road, 1-0. Sophomore Laura Dougall bounced back nicely in goal, making six saves in her first clean sheet of the season.
"Great bounce back game for the girls today," said second-year head coach Shawn Burke. "Drexel was a handful and i thought defensively we sorted out our issues from Friday. We still are far away from where we need to be, especially offensively, but winning is hard and the girls deserved this one."
After an early chance by Drexel was turned away by Dougall, Carissima Cutrona had a golden opportunity to give the Bulls the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute but her shot attempts from in close were both turned away by the Dragons keeper.
A couple minutes later the Dragons were whistled for a yellow card which gave Kassidy Kidd a free kick from just outside the box. Her attempt was pushed away by diving goalkeeper which kept the game scoreless in the 22nd minute.
Finally, in the 42 minute of action Angel Hart was able to give the Bulls their first lead of the young season as her rocket of a shot found some room just inside the left goal post from 30 yards out for the goal. The goal was Hart's third career marker.
The second half began with both sides trading opportunities as Civanni Moss of Drexel saw her shot clank off the post and Cutrona just missed wide on her shot attempt in the 48th minute.
The two sides went back-and-forth but the stout UB defense held strong, not allowing the Dragons any great chances to score the game-tying marker. Kristin Markiewicz, Jackie Hall, Andrea Niper, Hart and Brianna Shingary helped preserve Dougall's first clean sheet of the season and 14th of her career.
Dougall finished off her impressive contest with a season-high six saves in her 17th career victory as a Bull. Cutrona led all Bulls with three shots including two on goal while Kidd and Alex Lambert each had two shots on goal in the win. Celina Carrero and Nicole Gerritz each had a shot on goal in the 1-0 win.
Drexel held the slim 13-12 advantage in shots and a 8-5 edge in corner kicks in the defeat. Eve Badana finished the game with seven saves in the loss for the Dragons.
Following the match, Markiewicz was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after a great game defensively in the midfield for the Bulls.
