BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo women's soccer team (5-8-2, 2-6-0 MAC) dropped a double overtime heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon in their final home contest of the year to the Central Michigan Chippewas by the score of 1-0.
The game-winning goal by the Chippewas came in the 103rd minute following a Buffalo foul just outside the box. On the ensuing free kick from the right of the UB goal, Tory Kinniard played a perfect head pass to a wide open Laura Gosse, who wasted no time and deposited the ball in the back of the net off of her header.
The Bulls dominated the opening half of play but they were not able to get a goal. Karen McMahon had the two best chances of the half as in the 50th minute her header attempt was saved by a leaping Grace Labrecque and in the 52nd minute the McMahon blast was saved by the diving goalkeeper.
The second half was evenly played by both teams as the shots were seven apiece. The Bulls best chances came late in the half as Kassidy Kidd was robbed on the left side of the goal and then McMahon had her attempt go just left of the open goal in the 87th minute.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the first overtime period as most of the action was in the Bulls defensive third of the field.
For the game, Buffalo held the 13-11 advantage in shots while corner kicks were even at three. Ainsley Wheldon made four saves in the defeat while McMahon and Sophie Therien led the Bulls offense with three shot attempts each.
The Bulls will return to the pitch next weekend as they will travel to Eastern Michigan on Friday and Western Michigan on Sunday.
