BUFFALO, NY - In one of the most dramatic of finishes possible in soccer, Ohio scored as the game clock went to 0:00 in double overtime to steal the win on Senior Day Friday night at UB Stadium. The Bulls defense played a fantastic match, holding off a Bobcat attack that produced 13 corner kicks and 12 shots on goal, but a lone mistake proved to be the difference.
Sophomore goalie Danielle Quigley played well in her first start since the first game of the season, making 11 saves including two spectacular saves early in the first and second overtime periods. Her 11 saves are both a season and career high for the Arvada, CO native. However, with seconds remaining in the game, Ohio lined up a corner kick from the left side, and the ensuing kick went untouched as the final horn sounded.
It was a bittersweet end to the final home game for six Buffalo seniors, Lindsey and Kristen Bailey, Nina Connell, Julie Dale, Courtney McHale and Martina Pettenuzzo. Lindsey Bailey had one of the team's more promising attempts on offense, putting a free kick high from 25 yards out in the second half. The six seniors have combined to play in 270 games and score 17 goals.
After playing a physical 90 minutes, the teams were neck and neck through the first 19 minutes of overtime. Quigley made leaping save to punch a header over the top bar in the 97th minute and then came back in the 102nd minute made a diving save off a free kick shot on goal.
The loss drops Buffalo to 1-14-2 this season, and 0-7-2 in the Mid American Conference. With the five-game home stand complete, the team will hit the road for the final two games of the season. Sunday the Bulls will travel to face the Akron Zips. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
