KENT, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (7-2-1, 3-1 MAC) battled through a physical match and hot and sunny conditions to defeat Kent State 1-0 at Dix Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate student forward Jasmine Guerber scored the lone goal of the game for UB, her fourth of the year.
It was a possession battle in the midfield for the early part of the first half. Buffalo had their first shot of the game in the 15th minute off the foot of Guerber and later, the Bulls had a pair of shot attempts off a free kick, but they were knocked away by the Kent State defense.
Later, Maya Galko took a corner kick and played a ball that got knocked out to the foot of Ariana Victoriano who drilled a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Leah Shaffer.
Kent State had a scoring chance in the 30th minute as they made a run on goal, but Lexie Thompson came out to make a sliding save and knock the ball out of play. The hosts had one more look in the final minute as Maya Justice broke free and fired a shot on goal, but it sailed high and out of play and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls got on the board early in the second half as Carolyn Hinkle made a great run and played a ball across to Guerber who drilled a shot back across the box into the top right corner of the net to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead and that would be enough to secure the victory as the UB backline held the Golden Flashes without a shot attempt over the final 45 minutes of play.
Buffalo outshot Kent State 8-4 on the afternoon, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-0 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made three saves on the day while Shaffer made four stops.
Up next, Buffalo returns to the friendly confines of UB Stadium for a contest against the Akron Zips on Thursday, October 2 at 6pm.
