BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's soccer fifth year midfielder Leah Wengender has been named to the watch list for the 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy, as announced by United Soccer Coaches today.
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the nation's National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
Wengender is the third Bull to be named to the watch list, joining UB All-Americans Jackie Hall ('15) and Marcy Barberic ('21). She is the lone representative of the Mid-American Conference on the list.
"It's a huge testament to Leah and what she's done over her career to be recognized as one of the top players in the country," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We've always known how special of a player Leah is and it's great to see the rest of the country respect her consistent play as well. It speaks volumes of the continued growth of our program to have three players in the last decade named to this prestigious list."
Wengender is coming off a dominant senior season in which she was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region First Team and was a USC Scholar All-American while also earned Second Team All-MAC Recognition. She continued to bring speed and versatility to the Bulls attack, scoring a career-high five goals, the game-winning goal in the MAC championship game against Ball State, and recorded three assists while taking 42 shots.
Fifteen players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists following completion of Division I All-America voting at the end of the fall season and then the top three finalists will be announced on December 6th. The 2023 winner will be revealed on Jan. 5, 2024, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
