
Basak Akbas Advances To ITA Super Regionals

HANOVER, RI – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team had a successful weekend at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of Dartmouth University, highlighted by the singles performance from Basak Akbas, who advanced to the ITA Super Regionals.
Four Bulls entered the singles bracket of the ITA Regionals, which began with the Round of 128 and matches were played until the final eight were determined, who move on to the Super Regionals. Akbas received a first-round bye and then won her first match 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 over UConn's Olivia Wright in the round of 64. She continued her run by beating Danielle Hack of UMass, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 to advance to the round of 16 and then on Sunday she matched up with Boston's Michelle Kleynerman, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Fifth year Pia Schwarz also received an opening round bye and then defeated Dartmouth's Ujvala Jupalli 6-4, 7-5 before falling to Addison Ahlstrom of Brown 1-6, 5-7 in the round of 32. Azra Deniz Comlek defeated Rhode Island's Paulina Loredo 6-1, 6-3 in her opening match before falling to Yale's Rhea Shrivastava 0-6, 5-7, both in the round of 64. Deanne Choo also picked up an opening round win, defeating Mariya Krosakova of UMass 7-6, 6-3 before dropping her second match to Yale's Ann Wright Guerry 0-6, 4-6.
In doubles action, Ambre Amat and Choo defeated Providence's Darah Ross and Julia Miglorini 8-6 in their opening match before falling to Boston College's Hailey Wilcox and Edwards 5-8 in the second round. Gabriella Akopyan and Akbas also picked up an opening round win, defeating Providence's Katie Mulvey and Vannelie Melendez 8-0 before dropping their second round match 7-8 (3) in a hard-fought battle with Zeynep Erman and Shiori Ito of Syracuse. Schwarz and Comlek dropped their opening match 6-8.
With her top eight performance, Akbas will move on to the ITA Super Regionals, which will begin in three weeks at Yale.
The Bulls return to team action in two weeks with a pair of matches against Saint Francis and Binghamton on Sunday, October 16.
