WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team fell to Toledo, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center.
The Rockets opened the afternoon with a victory in doubles action with wins at two and three. The win at third doubles is what clinched the point. The Bulls picked up the triumph at first doubles as Bjoern Petersen and Finn Macnamara won, 6-3.
Singles action was tight across the board despite the Rockets winning four of the six matches. Toledo came away with a win at three to extend its lead, but then the Bulls got on the board with a win at fifth singles as junior Simon Wibler won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Victories at two and six for Toledo clinched the match, while contests at first and fourth singles went into third sets. Macnamara lost his opening set 6-2 before coming back to win in a tiebreaker in the second set. However, he would fall just short in the third set super tiebreaker.
At first singles, Petersen lost his first set in a tiebreaker, but the senior then came back with a 6-4 win in the second and he won his tiebreaker, 10-8.
"Credit to Toledo they wanted it more than we did," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Right now, we are going to have to get back to what Bulls tennis is known for, which is the best energy and aggressive play. We will regroup and try some new things on Sunday against a good Ball State team."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday morning when the Bulls host Ball State at 11:00 am.
