BUFFALO, NY - For the first time in her UB career, freshman defender Marcy Barberic was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Barberic becomes the first UB player this season to earn the weekly recognition.
Barberic continued her high level of play defensively this week for the Bulls as they went 1-0-1 in their first road weekend of the MAC slate. On Friday, Barberic netted her first career goal, a laser into the upper corner of the net, to give the Bulls the early 1-0 lead. Buffalo went on to win the match against Eastern Michigan 2-1 as they allowed just six shots on goal through 90 minutes.
On Sunday, Barberic and the Buffalo defense had one of their strongest outings of the season as they held the MAC's leading scorer, Lexi Pelafas, without a goal in their fourth clean sheet of the season. UB was able to battle Central Michigan to the 0-0 draw while allowing nine shots on goal through 110 minutes of action.
Barberic has started all 11 matches for the Bulls this season, playing in multiple positions. The freshman has logged 927 minutes while registering a goal and six shots while helping the Bulls secure four clean sheets on the year.
Buffalo returns to the pitch on Thursday afternoon as they wrap up a three-game road swing in Athens, OH as they take on MAC east foe Ohio Bobcats. First kick is set for 4:00 pm on Thursday.
