BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team returns home this weekend to host a pair of non-conference matches at UB Stadium. The Bulls play host to the Brown Bears on Thursday night at 7:00 pm and they will play in the second match of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team on Sunday at 1:30 pm as they host Navy.
"We are really excited about this weekend for our players," said third-year head coach Shawn Burke. "We shifted focus this week at training and I am eager to see the implementation against Brown and Navy. These two teams will mirror MAC play and will be a great test to see which direction our team is going into September."
The Bulls enter Thursday's match against the Bears with a 1-2-1 overall record after going 1-0-1 last weekend. The Bulls collected their first win of the season in their home opener against St. Bonaventure by the score of 3-1 before tying Binghamton on the road Sunday, 1-1, despite outshooting the Bearcats 25-9 for the match.
The Buffalo offense is led by sophomore Carissima Cutrona who has netted a team-high three goals on seven shots. The reigning UB Athlete of the Week, notched her first career two-goal game and game-winning goal in the Bulls 3-1 win over Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure. Cutrona backed up her big match with the Bulls lone goal in their 1-1 draw at Binghamton. Junior Julia Benati ranks second on the team with three points, one goal and one assist, as she converted on a penalty kick goal against St. Bonaventure.
In goal, the Bulls have used a pair of goalkeepers as Laura Dougall started the first two matches of the season owning a 1.33 goals-against average while making 11 saves. Senior Cassie Betancourt got the nod between the pipes in the last two matches and owns a 1-0-1 record to go along with a 1.10 goals-against average while making 13 saves. Her win against St. Bonaventure was her first career win in the blue and white.
Brown comes to town on Thursday after earning an impressive 3-0 victory in their season opener against Rhode Island on Sunday. The Bears were led offensively by Carly Gould who netted the game-winning goal and assisted on the other two markers en route to a four-point match. Junior defender Maclaine Lehan netted a goal and assist in the victory while in goal sophomore Christine Etzel made two saves as she earned her fifth career cleansheet.
Navy currently owns a 0-3-1 overall record and they will take on the Niagara Purple Eagles on Friday night before heading to town on Sunday for a 1:30 pm match. The Midshipmen opened the season with a great effort against #5 Stanford but just fell short, losing 2-1. They were then defeated in overtime by TCU, 1-0, before tying UNC Wilmington 2-2 and falling at NC State 4-1.
The Naval Academy is led offensively by a pair of players who have both netted a pair of goals while coming off the bench.
