BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's soccer senior defender Kristin Markiewicz was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. This marks the first time Markiewicz has earned the weekly honor.
Markiewicz had a strong weekend defensively for the Bulls as she helped UB earn a perfect 2-0 weekend with wins over Toledo and Central Michigan. On Friday, Markiewicz and the UB defense only allowed four shots on goal with the lone goal coming on a penalty kick. On Senior Day on Sunday, Markiewicz had her best game of the season as she finished with an assist on Celina Carrero's goal. Markiewicz sent a perfect long pass in to Carrero who buried the goal. The assist was Markiewicz's first of the season and fourth of her career. Defensively, Markiewicz single-handily saved a goal in the second half with a great defensive play as she helped preserve UB's seventh cleansheet of the season. The Bulls allowed just four shots on goal.
Markiewicz and the UB defense have been extra stingy at home as of late as she has helped the Bulls earn a 17-1-2 record at home over the past two seasons and have earned 11 shutouts in those 20 matches. Markiewicz has helped UB hold their last eight opponents to five shots on goal or less while going 5-2-1 over that stretch.
The Bulls return to the field on Friday night as they travel to take on the Miami (OH) RedHawks in a big MAC East division matchup at 3:00 pm. The Bulls will then head to Ball State for a match on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
