BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) opened up their 2014 campaign in winning fashion as they downed the visiting St. Bonaventure Bonnies by the score of 1-0 in front of the home fans at UB Stadium. The win marks UB head coach Shawn Burke's first career coaching victory.
"We had a great crowd for this season opening win" said first year head coach Shawn Burke. "Our girls came out a little nervous but once we got those nerves out of our system, I thought we put our style of play out there and executed it perfectly. This victory was very pleasing as from top to bottom it was a complete team effort."
Applying heavy pressure throughout most of the second half, the Bulls attack was able to put one past the Bonnies goalkeeper Christina Sarokon in the 69th minute. Megan Abman fed a crossing pass to Celina Carrero who made a quick move and found a streaking Julia Benati to the right of the keeper for the goal. Benati took the Carrero pass and buried the ball in the lower left corner for the game-winning tally in her first career game.
With the time winding down, the Bonnies had their best chance of the night to tie the score at one but Laura Dougall made a leaping save and punched the ball over the cross bar to preserve the Bulls 1-0 win.
Early on the Bonnies controlled the pace of play as they had multiple chances to get on the board in the first 25 minutes of action. A pair of Bonnies shots were turned aside by Dougall to preserve the scoreless contest. In the 38th minute, the Bulls had their best chance of the half to break the tie as Benati got loose and fired a shot from 30 yards out that rang off the cross bar and was cleared by the St. Bonaventure defense.
The Bulls opened up the second half with multiple great chances to score but they were unsuccessful. Andrea Niper fed Megan Giesen in front of the net but her strike from just inside the box soared high of the goal. Just three minutes later, Katie Roberts had her low shot pushed wide by the diving keeper. Kassidy Kidd also had a great chance from in close in the 55th minute but her shot was denied from in close.
The UB defense was strong all night long as the group of Angel Hart, Jackie Hall, Dana Lytle and Sophie Therien held the Bonnies without a shot on goal for a 81 minute stretch. The 81 minute drough for the Bonnies lasted from the four minute mark of the opening half to the 85 minute of the second half when Dougall was asked to make a save on a Lauren Hill shot.
"Our staple is always going to be our backline and they were tremendous tonight for us," stated Burke. "Laura Dougall was not asked to make any spectacular saves because they did a nice job in front of her."
For the game, the Bulls held the 18-9 advanbtage in shots including the 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The corner kicks were even at three for the contest. The clean sheet for Dougall was the first of her career.
The Bulls will return to UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as they will host cross town rival and Big Four foe Canisius College at 12:00 pm.
