DEKALB, IL – The State University of New York, Buffalo women's soccer team stayed unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play on Friday night as they battled Northern Illinois to a 0-0 draw on the road. The draw gives UB an overall record of 8-2-2 and a conference mark of 4-0-1.
"I give a ton of credit to Northern Illinois," said first-year head coach Shawn Burke. "They played with a lot of determination and fight all night. At the end of the day, we weren't technical to get a full three points but we battled for a result."
In net, freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall continued her strong play for the Bulls as she earned her eighth shutout of the season, moving her into a tie for second place in shutouts in a season in program history. Dougall needs just two more shutouts to tie the record currently held by Ainsley Wheldon. For the season, Dougall owns an 8-2-2 overall record and a goal-against average of 0.35.
The Bulls had a flurry of opportunities in the final overtime period to try and score the game-winning goal but three straight UB chances were turned aside by Huskie keeper Amy Annala. Megan Giesen had the first chance as she headed a ball towards the goal but her chance was saved. A minute later, Kassidy Kidd had a shot that was turned away and then Julia Benati saw her attempt get swallowed up by the Huskies keeper in the 108th minute of action.
The UB defense of Sophie Therien, Jackie Hall, Kristin Markiewicz and Angel Hart continued their strong play as they have now allowed five or fewer shots on goal in eight of 12 games this season.
For the match, the Bulls held the 19-7 advantage in shots including a dominant 8-2 margin in the second half and a 6-2 margin in the two overtime periods. Kidd led all players with seven shots while Courtney Mann, Katie Roberts and Benati each finished with two shots for the game.
Following the match, Kidd was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after another strong game offensively. Kidd finished off her night with a match-high seven shots and three shots on goal. She has been awarded "Player of the Match" in two of the last three matches for the Bulls.
When asked about the play of Kidd, head coach Shawn Burke stated, "Kassidy Kidd was one of the rare bright spots for us tonight as she was very involved offensively, which we like."
