BUFFALO, NY - Senior defender Shannon Algoe was named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Academic team on Monday, becoming a three-time honoree for the Bulls. She becomes the first three-time honoree for the team since Andrea Vescio, who won three straight from 2006-08. The team also put five others on the honorable mention team.
Algoe solidified a defensive backline as the team's sweeper, starting in all 19 games in her senior season. Despite playing on defense, her vaunted leg strength and athleticism allowed her to take 26 shots, the third most on the team and doubling her previous career high. The honor follows a junior season where she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I and All-American Second Team.
On the honorable mention team was Natalie Jurisevic, Katie Kerr, Courtney Mann, Katie Roberts, and Stephanie Velez.
Jurisevic continued to grow into her role as an attacking defender, not only locking down the opposition's sideline offense but also making deep runs into the attack. She started in 18 games while appearing in all 19 for the team. Kerr started in a career-high 17 matches and appeared in every game for the team in her senior season, scoring four points, with one goal and a career-high two assists.
Mann took on more of an offensive role to go with her hard-nosed play in the midfield, setting career highs in shots, shots on goal, and goals scored. Roberts tied for the team lead with three goals for the season, played in 18 games and made nine starts. Velez ended her career as a Bull with a trio of meaningful goals, tying her for the team lead in the category. She scored goals against Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and Akron that helped give the team a boost.
The Bulls finished the season 5-12-2, but will bring back the majority of a veteran team.
