BUFFALO, NY - Ainsley Wheldon collected two more shutouts over weekend to help lead the team to a Big Four Classic title and on Monday was named the Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Week. It is her first sole honor as she shared co-player of the week honors on August 29.
On Friday, Wheldon made three saves in the 2-0 win against Niagara and in the Sunday title game against Canisius, she single-handedly saved the game twice; first with a save in the 77th minute of the scoreless game. Canisius then controlled the scoring chances in the first overtime period, with a shot that was blocked and another shot that was turned away by Wheldon. It was one of seven total saves in the game and it helped her secure her sixth shutout of the season as the Bulls won in double overtime.
Through eight games, Wheldon is the conference leader in goals against average (0.36), save percentage (.936) and shutouts (6). With the pair of wins over the weekend, Wheldon is also climbing the program's two win records. Now with eight career wins she sits in the top 20, and for a single season her seven wins are the tenth most in program history.
Following the completion of the Big Four Classic, freshman Katie Roberts was named the tournament's MVP and four UB players were named to the All-Tournament Team (Jackie Hall, Danielle Turner, Wheldon and Roberts). The Bulls finished the non-conference schedule with a 7-1 record and will now open MAC play with two home games this coming weekend against division rivals. First up will be Bowling Green (3-6) at 8 pm Friday at UB Stadium followed by a Sunday afternoon game against Miami (OH) (5-2).
