BUFFALO, NY - For her crucial shutout of Kent State in the regular season finale, goalie Ainsley Wheldon was named the Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Week. The honor was Wheldon's third of the season.
The sophomore from Waterloo, Ontario was there to snuff out any quality chances in a 1-0 shutout of Kent State Thursday afternoon to help the team clinch a berth in the MAC tournament. After a quiet first half aside from a potential breakaway she broke up, Wheldon was pressured throughout the final 45 minutes but made five saves (of her six total) in the second half. The shutout was her tenth of the season, extending her program mark for clean sheets in a single season.
On the national stage, Wheldon ranks in the top five among all Division I players in total saves (137), minutes played (1844) and save percentage (.907), and ranks 29th in goals-against average (.684). The team will need her to be on her game this Friday as a trip to the Mid-American Conference title game is on the line. The Bulls will take on #1 seed Toledo Friday at 11:05 am in the conference semifinals.
