KALAMAZOO, MI - The Buffalo women's soccer team ended its extended road trip on a high note Sunday afternoon, holding Western Michigan scoreless to earn its first points in conference play. Freshman goalie Ainsley Wheldon earned her first career shutout after making three saves, and the defense helped cool down a hot Broncos offense.
Just two days after the Broncos lit up Kent State with five goals, the Bulls held the team to just three shots on goal. The shutout caps a solid weekend for Wheldon, who matched a season high of 10 saves in a 1-0 loss at Northern Illinois Friday. This shutout was the team's first in nearly a year, as the last came Oct. 11, 2009 against Northern Illinois. The team also hasn't played in overtime since a 1-0 win over Niagara early last season.
Freshman Megan Abman provided two of the Bulls' best scoring opportunities, putting both of her shots on goal. Sophomore Shannon Fisher added a shot on goal and freshman Karen McMahon took three shots.
The Bulls, now 0-3-1 in the MAC, will return home for an extended home stand, welcoming in Central Michigan Friday at 7:00 pm and Eastern Michigan Sunday at noon. The five straight games at the friendly confines of UB Stadium represent a crucial point in the team's conference season.
