BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's
soccer team played host to Binghamton this afternoon in a close,
low scoring affair. Binghamton came out on top, 1-0, but the Bulls
fought to the bitter end to keep the game close.
The first half was a game for the midfield's, as the ball
went back and forth between the teams. Binghamton outshot the
Bulls, 6-3, but two of Buffalo's shots were on goal to give
them the advantage. Buffalo was spared a goal against as Binghmaton
took a hard shot from close range at the 33:47 mark, but Melissa
Klein was there to block the shot, which otherwise would have gone
in.
The only goal of the game came at the 50:25 mark in the second half
as the Bearcat's capitalized on a UB foul by netting a goal
off a free kick. Binghamton's Stefani Knopnick shot the ball
off a free kick from about 18 yards out to earn the unassisted
goal. The Bulls played an aggressive game, but couldn't get
by the Binghamton defense. Julie Dale had a chance late in the game
off a corner kick from Lindsey Bailey but the header shot was
stopped by the Binghamton goalkeeper. Nina Connell had a team high
two shots on goal. Stephanie Velez and Kristen Bailey also had
shots on goal for Buffalo.
Jen Mihok played 90 minutes of solid defense, anchoring the Buffalo
backfield. UB goalkeeper Amy Coron had three saves in net for the
Bulls.
The Bulls will take a week off from competition before travelling
across town to take on Canisius on Sunday, September 20. The match
is set for 4 pm at the Demske Sports Complex.
