BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's
soccer team fell to Ohio, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
Freshman Stephanie Velez scored the Buffalo goal midway through the
first half. The game marked one of the final home games for eight
Buffalo seniors, as Jocelyn Cibinskas, Amy Coron, Caitlin Higgins,
Sara Hilliard, Jessica Keaton, Jenifer Kern, Melissa Klein and
Jennifer Mihok were all honored before the match.
Velez scored her sixth goal of the season as Shannon Fisher fed a
pass along the right side to Aubrey Stahl who perfectly placed the
ball in front of the net where Velez booted it past the Ohio
keeper. The goal came 27 minutes into the match, as Velez continues
to lead the Bulls in scoring this season. The lead didn't
last long with the Bobcats sending the tying goal past UB
goalkeeper Coron at the 35:11 mark to send the teams into halftime
tied 1-1.
Early in the second half, the Bobcats capitalized on a UB foul,
scoring a quick goal off a free kick a minute into the half to take
the lead, and eventually win the game. Mihok had two shots in the
game, both on goal. Katie Kerr and Velez each added two shots on
the day.
"Obviously it wasn't the result we wanted, but we just
want to thank the seniors for the four or five years they've
given us and try to take the rest of the day and remember the good
times," said head coach Michael Thomas.
Buffalo had a 6-3 advantage in shots for the first half, but Ohio
took the edge overall, outshooting the Bulls 11-10 throughout the
match. Coron had three saves on the day.
UB will play the final regular season match of the year at home
this Thursday, October 29 against Kent State. The game is set for 3
pm at UB Stadium.
