HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University at Buffalo softball team (5-12, 0-0 MAC) defeated the Hofstra Pride on Friday, 7-6, to open the James Madison Invitational. They later fell to host JMU in five innings, 11-2.
GAME 1 VS. HOFSTRA
In the first game of the invite, Hofstra quickly got on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. Their lead didn't linger as Bella Smithson drove a deep fly by to center to tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.
Buffalo's offense poured it on in the ensuing innings. Ardyn Hoft ripped an RBI double to center field that drove in Bri Delaney. Leading 2-1, Delaney Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Abbey Nagel. Emily Gorman's single up the middle scored Tabith von Kolen to put the Bulls in front, 4-1 after two innings of play.
After a scoreless third inning, Buffalo's offense went back to work as Gorman singled up the middle again. This time it was Hopf that scored to give the Bulls a 5-1 lead after four innings.
Hofstra responded in the top of the fifth. A two-run home run forced a pitching change as the Bulls led, 5-3. After three walks, a fielder's choice advanced the runner home to make it a one run game. The next batter singled up the middle to score a pair of runs as the Pride took a 6-5 lead.
The Bulls didn't hesitate in the bottom half of the inning as Reagen Terwilliger smashed her first career home run to tie the game. Smithson followed it up with a solo shot of her own to give Buffalo the 7-6 lead.
Emily Watters took care of business as she recorded eight consecutive outs to secure the win, her second of the season.
Gorman, Smithson and Nagel led the team with two hits each. Smithson and Gorman both had two RBIs.
GAME 2 AT JAMES MADISON
The second game of the afternoon was not too kind toward the Bulls. After a scoreless first inning, the Bulls jumped on top in the second inning as Ardyn Hopf ripped her second triple of the season to score Abbey Nagel. Their 1-0 lead was the only lead they'd have against the Dukes.
A three-home run inning by James Madison gave them a 4-1 lead after the second inning. The home runs didn't stop there as a two-run home run in the fourth added to their lead as they now led, 6-1. The Dukes scored two more runs in the inning as they now led, 8-1.
In the fifth, a bases loaded walk by Lily Lauck scored Tabitha von Kolen to cut James Madison's lead to 8-2. The Dukes ended the game with a base clearing double to take home the 11-2 win.
