CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University at Buffalo softball team (5-7, 0-0 MAC) split their double header at the Low Country Classic on Friday. In the first game of the day, Buffalo shutout the Prairie View A&M Panthers, 3-0. In their second game, the Bulls fell to the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 8-0.
GAME 1 VS. WOFFORD
To open competition at the Low Country Classic, the Bulls fell to the Wofford Terriers in an eight-inning loss. It was a pitchers' duel between Alexis Lucyshyn and Tayven Stephenson. Combined the pitchers had 19 strikeouts, 13 of which came from the Bulls' ace.
Abbey Nagel singled in the first but was stranded on base. Buffalo had their chance to strike first in the third inning as they had Sara Kelly and Madison Fernimen on base. Nagel ripped a ball to the third baseman but got the force out at third to put two outs on the board. Lucyshyn singled to center with Fernimen rounding third but would get thrown out to end the inning.
In the fourth inning Buffalo had Mia Mitchell on third base with two outs, but couldn't reach home.
The Bulls nearly walked it off in the bottom of the seventh with Mitchell hitting a double to right center and advancing to third off a throwing error. She went for it all and off the Terriers' error, but would get thrown out at the plate.
In the top of the eighth, the Terriers moved the runner over off a ground out to the pitcher. Wofford took the 1-0 lead off a wild pitch. Buffalo couldn't move the runner over and fell in eight innings.
Mitchell led the Bulls with two hits as Fernimen, Nagel, Lucychyn and Kelly had one hit each.
GAME 2 VS. EVANSVILLE
In game two against the Evansville Aces, Julia Tarantino picked up her first win of the season. She went the distance and allowed just one earned run.
The Aces took a 2-0 lead in the first innings off timely hitting. The Bulls' offense struggled to get started until the fourth inning when they got on the board with a Mitchell sacrifice fly to score Lucyshyn. Headed into the fifth inning, the Bulls trailed 2-1.
In the sixth inning, Mitchell doubled to left field to put the tying run in scoring position. Lily Lauck walked and forced a pitching change for the Aces. After the pitching change, Evansville got two quick outs. Tarantino helped her cause with an RBI single to center scoring Mitchell. Tarantino stole second and forced a bad throw to allow the Bulls to steal a run from the Aces and take a 3-2 lead.
Evansville had no answers in the top of the seventh as the Bulls completed the late comeback to win, 3-2.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow against the Wofford Terriers at 10 a.m. and then face the Charleston Cougars at 3 p.m.
