
Bulls Fall to Wofford and Charleston on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University at Buffalo softball team (5-9, 0-0 MAC) dropped both contests on Saturday at the Low Country Classic. In the first game of the day, Buffalo lost to Wofford, 7-3. Against host Charleston, the Cougars edged the Bulls in extras, 6-5.
GAME 1 VS. WOFFORD
Buffalo looked for revenge against the Terriers after yesterday's 1-0 eight-inning loss. It was a scoreless affair until the top of the third inning when the Bulls struck first. Madison Fernimen started the inning off with a single to right center. Abbey Nagel then doubled to left with Fernimen advancing to third. With Mia Mitchell at the plate, she hit her first home run of the season to put the Bulls on top, 3-0. The Terriers got on the board in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Things unraveled for the Bulls in the fifth innings. After getting the lead off batter to ground out, the Terriers got on base with a single up the middle. Buffalo changed pitchers with Emily Watters leaving the game and Alexis Lucyshyn moving from right field to the circle. The Bulls' ace allowed four six in the inning to put the Terriers in front, 7-3.
Buffalo had no answers as Wofford won, 7-3.
GAME 2 VS. CHARLESTON
In game two against the Charleston Cougars, the Bulls got out to another 4-0 lead. Buffalo's offense exploded in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Sara Kelly singled to right field to score Lily Lauck. Fernimen's bat stayed hot as she hit in Kelly and Julia Tarantino with Avelyn Van Heyst moving to third. Van Heyst scored off a wild pitch to give the Bulls the 4-0 lead.
Their 4-0 lead didn't last ling as the Cougars scored three in the bottom of the second. With two runners on and two outs, Charleston's timely hitting was effective. They would hit an RBI single and then a two RBI double to left center to make it a 4-3 Buffalo lead.
It was a stalemate until the bottom of the seventh when the Cougars had their last chance to tie the game. With two outs and a runner on second base, the Cougars waved home a run on a double to right center. Charleston forced extras with the game tied at four.
With runners starting on second base in extras, the Bulls didn't waste time as Lucyshyn knocked in Hannah McGonigle to put the Bulls up 5-4. Mitchell then walked to put runners on first and second. The Cougars got out of the inning as they recorded three straight outs.
The Cougars moved the runner over with a sacrifice bunt which paid off as a sacrifice fly scored the runner. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the game was tied at five. Charleston was able to get two runners on after two singles. The Cougars walked it off with an RBI single to right field.
The Bulls will close out their competition at the Low Country Classic tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they face Evansville.
