BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team saw their 2023 campaign come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Kent State at UB Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Bulls finished the season with a 7-5-6 overall record and a 4-4-3 mark in league play.
The Bulls were aggressive from the opening kickoff as Leah Wengender slid behind the defense and ripped a shot on net from point blank range, but Sarah Melen made a good save under pressure.
Later in the 10th minute, Wengender was at it again as she found space at the top of the box and drilled a shot, but the wind took it, and it sailed high and out of play. The Bulls were at it again just a couple minutes later as UB took a corner kick and Ashleigh Fortunate got the rebound and one-timed a great attempt on target, but Melen made a diving save to knock the ball out of play.
Perhaps the best chance of the half came in the 23rd minute as Wengender played a ball out wide to Sarah Woods who slid a pass to Arianna Zumpano in the box, but she couldn't get all of it and Melen made the save.
Kent State got on the board in the 38th minute as Emma Barnett played a curling ball that clanged off the crossbar, but Josie Morgan was there for the rebound goal to put the Golden Flashes up 1-0 and that would be the score at the break.
Buffalo started the second half just like the first as Krohn found room in tight space and ripped a shot with her left foot that was hit well but sailed over the bar. Later, after Zumpano drew a foul, Maya Galko took the ensuing free kick and drilled a shot, but it also sailed high and out of play.
The Bulls finally broke through in the 54th minute as Woods got the ball on the right side of the field and lofted a ball to the back post which found the head of Krohn who beats Melen with her league-leading 13th goal of the season, to tie the game at one.
Buffalo made another run just a few minutes later as Zumpano once again found herself in the middle of the box but couldn't convert as Melen made the easy save.
Those missed opportunities proved costly as Alisa Arthur weaved her way through traffic, beat the last UB defender and found the bottom left corner of the net to give the visitors the lead in the 71st minute on the lone shot of the half for Kent State, and that would be all they would need to secure the victory.
The Bulls outshot the Golden Flashes 17-5 on the day, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Senior Rebecca Winslow made one save on the day while Melen made six stops for Kent State.
