
Kelly and Wengender Named Scholar All-Americans

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's soccer standouts Emily Kelly and Leah Wengender have been named Scholar All-Americans by United Soccer Coaches, as announced by the organization on Thursday. Kelly was named to the first team while Wengender earns third team honors.
Kelly and Wengender are just the third and fourth Bulls in program history to be named to a Scholar All-America team, joining Gurjeena Jandu and Jackie Hall who received third team honors in 2019 and 2014, respectively.
To be eligible for selection, candidates must be a at least a junior in academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 for their career. Players must also have played in at least 75 percent of the season's games, contributed significantly to the team's success and be an elite player as evidenced by athletic accolades for the season.
"What an unbelievable accomplishment," said head coach Shawn Burke. "To be recognized as two of the best in the entire country speaks volumes to the impact they have made on the field and more importantly in the classroom."
A communication major with a 3.856 GPA, Kelly earns the honor for the first time in her career after receiving Second Team All-American and First Team All-Midwest Region earlier this month. The MAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-MAC honoree finished her storied career as Buffalo's all-time winningest goalkeeper with 54 wins and holds the school record with 35 shutouts while ranking third in program history in career goals against average (0.934) and eighth in career saves (331). The Wilson, NY native set the single season goals against average (0.43) tied the shutout record (13) and is second in single season wins (15). Kelly led the nation and the MAC in shutouts (13) while also leading the league and ranking in the top 10 nationally in goals against average (0.431) and save percentage (0.878).
Wengender, a business administration major with a 3.77 GPA, also earns the honor for the first time in her career after receiving First Team All-Midwest Region and Second Team All-MAC recognition earlier this season. The Rochester, NY native continued to bring speed and versatility to the Bulls attack, scoring a career-high five goals and recording three assists on 42 shots while starting all 21 games for UB this season.
