WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – After suffering their first defeat yesterday, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team answered in a big way on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls defeated St. Bonaventure, 7-0, at the Miller Tennis Center.
The success began in doubles as victories at second and third double gave UB the early point. Junior Simon Wibler and senior Bjoern Petersen began with a 6-2 win at second doubles and the freshmen duo of Tom Owen and Finn Macnamara won at third doubles, 6-3.
Singles was tight despite the Bulls winning all six matches as three of those went into three sets. Wibler opened the scoring with a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles and sophomore Greg Hastings had a 6-3, 6-3 win at sixth singles. After getting out to a slow start, Petersen turned it on and clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Senior Matthew Johnson overcame a first set loss with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at second doubles and Macnamara remained unbeaten in singles with a 6-2, 3-7 (3), 6-4 victory at third single. Owen completed the sweep at fourth singles as he won his match 6-1, 6-7 (5), 10-5.
"This weekend was a great learning experience for our team," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Yesterday, Cleveland State came in and took it to us from the moment the match started. We got down too fast and they were savvy enough to keep the pressure on. We made some adjustments and did a better job today and fought off some mental hiccups to get the win. I am hopeful we can pick up one more non-conference match before we play Binghamton in March. Go Bulls!"
Currently the Bulls are off from competition until March 13 at Binghamton.
