BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team hosts the UB Invitational Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25 at the Bulls' outdoor tennis facility, the University Tennis Club.
The Bulls will host local rivals St. Bonaventure and Niagara as well as Kennesaw State of Georgia, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Eight draws in singles and doubles play will be contested over the weekend by the four squads.
UB is coming off its season-opening tournament of the fall schedule as the Bulls participated in the Princeton Invitational. The Bulls went 9-9 in singles matches and 4-3 in doubles competition. Freshman Ivan Vereschchaga and sophomore Travis Zappia combined to win the C flight doubles title at Princeton with a 3-0 record, including an 8-2 victory over a duo from Fairleigh Dickinson in the championship match. Freshman Damien David was impressive in his first collegiate action. David reached the championship final of the B flight singles, posting three straight wins before falling in three sets to Penn State's Tomas Hanzlik.
"We are very excited to be hosting the Buffalo Invitational this weekend. It will be a great opportunity for our guys to get in three good singles and doubles matches against very good opponents," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We are also very pleased Kennesaw State has made the trip up here."
Play begins on Friday at 3:00 pm. Saturday's matches are slated for 12:00 pm. Sunday's matches will begin at 10:00 am.
