ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team opened the spring campaign on Sunday morning falling to the Cornell Big Red, 7-0, at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca.
The Bulls picked up a doubles victory as the number one pair of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Vusa Hove defeated Venkat Iyer and Danny Riggs, 8-6.
UB played the Big Red tough in the singles session but were unable to gain a victory. Damien David, playing at first singles, and Hove, at third singles, both pushed their opponents to 7-6 tiebreakers but were unable to break through for a win.
"Obviously we aren't happy with this start," stated UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We had a good week of practice leading up but didn't execute mentally after letting the doubles point slip away with a break lead at three. That being said, Cornell showed why are [number] 45 in the country and we aren't ranked. They were than us. We plan on hitting the practice courts this week and regroup for Brown and Bryant next week."
The Bulls travel to Rhode Island for matches next weekend against Brown on Saturday and Bryant on Sunday.
