Bulls Open Cornell Invitational on Winning Notes

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team won four of six singles matches and all three of its doubles matches as the first day of the Cornell Invitational came to close on Friday.
The tournament, which also includes Lafayette, Duquesne, Princeton and the host Cornell, is divided into two singles and two doubles flights with first round matches held in both disciplines on Friday. There is no team scoring.
In the A flight singles, UB's Wojciech Starakiewicz defeated Cornell's Zhongming Chen, 6-0, 6-3 while Damien David knocked off Cornell's Spencer Clark by a 6-4, 6-2 margin. Ivan Vereschaga fell to Duquesne's Aram Abgaryan, 7-5, 6-4 and Alex Kalinin lost to Quoc-Daniel Nguyen of Cornell, 6-3, 6-4.
In the B flight singles matches, Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik defeated Cornell's Jason Karson, 6-1, 6-1 while Travis Zappia needed three sets to down Brett Cromwell of Cornell, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
UB won both first round A flight doubles matches. Starakiewicz and Zappia defeated Cornell's Nguyen and Clark, 8-4, and David and Vereshchaga downed Princeton's Dan Davies and Ben Quazzo, 8-5. In the B flight, Shkodnik and Kalinin knocked off Lafayette's James Oliver and Alex Charchalis, 8-1.
"Our goal today was to be disciplined with our game plans and it shows in our results," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We competed well and have shown improvements since the beginning of the fall. We are looking forward to more opportunities tomorrow."
