Bulls Stumble Through Second Day at ITA Tournament

ITHACA, NY – It was a rough day for the University at Buffalo men's tennis team as both of its entries on Friday were eliminated in their first round matches at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament at Cornell University.
In doubles play, the tandem of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Damien David dropped an 8-6 decision to Columbia's Winston Lin and Haig Schneiderman in the opening round of 64. UB's lone singles player on the afternoon, Vusa Hove, was also upended in a three-set match to Harvard's Sean Chaudhuri in the opening round of 128. The scores were 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
David and Starakiewicz will compete in singles action on Saturday as the lone Bulls remaining in the tournament. Both received first round byes in the draw. David's match is scheduled for 1:45 pm on Saturday with Starakiewicz slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
The Bulls went 1-2 in Thursday's qualifying round with Ivan Vereshchaga picking up a win before falling in the second round and Alex Kalinin eliminated in the first round.
"We have beaten ourselves in all of the matches we have lost," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We expected Wojceich and Damien to step up and play loose tennis tomorrow and help redeem ourselves."
