BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer (4-0-1) team put forth a dominant effort worthy of its special senior class, to lead the Bulls to a 3-0 win over Colgate on Senior Day at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It is the second straight shutout, and third overall, for UB this season.
The Bulls were the aggressors from the opening whistle as Jasmine Guerber broke free at the top of the box in the second minute and got a shot off that was cleared away and then later in the 13th minute, she drilled a shot that clanged off the crossbar.
Buffalo broke through in the 16th minute as Olivia Bizzoni found Guerber who slid a pass through to Sarah Woods who then made a great run and drilled a shot into the top left corner of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls added to their lead in the 21st minute as Woods returned the favor, playing a ball into the box that found the foot of Guerber who banged it home to put UB up 2-0.
UB continued to attack in the final minutes of the half as Laiken Kiser drew a foul in the box and Ellie Simmons converted on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead at the half.
Buffalo continued to create scoring opportunities in the second half as Simmons played a big ball up ahead to Guerber who drilled her second ball of the day off the crossbar and out of play.
The Raiders had their best look of the game in the 63rd minute on a free kick, but Lexie Thompson read it perfectly and came up with the save. UB had one last look late in the game as Arianna Zumpano made a great run and beat the keeper, but a Raiders' defender slid in at the last second to keep the senior's goal off the board.
Buffalo outshot Colgate 15-7 on the day, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made three saves while Alli Popham made five stops for the Raiders. With a goal and an assist on the day, Woods was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"This class has experienced it all," said head coach Shawn Burke. "From Covid shutdowns to Power 4 victories to MAC Champions, our seniors have reset the standard here at Buffalo. It's no accident they all play a major role on the pitch, but it's who they are as humans that will truly be their legacy in our program"
Up next, Buffalo heads out west for a two-game stint in Colorado, beginning on Thursday, September 12 with a contest at Colorado College at 8pm (EST).
