Bulls Win Pair of Matches to Open Season

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened the 2022 fall campaign on Friday with a pair of victories, sweeping Niagara 7-0 before defeating St. Bonaventure 6-1 at the UB Tennis Courts.
In the first match against the Purple Eagles, the Bulls won all three doubles contests. Pia Schwarz and Azra Deniz Comlek won 6-4 at first doubles and Ambre Amat and Deanne Choo won easily at second doubles, 6-3. Gabriella Akopyan and Basak Akbas won 6-4 at third doubles.
UB won all six singles matches in straight sets. Schwarz dropped just one game at fifth singles and Comlek was also dominant, winning 6-1, 6-1 at third singles. Amat dropped just two games in the first set and cruised in the second to win 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles. Freshmen Choo and Akbas picked up their first singles victories as a Bull, winning 6-1, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3 at fifth and second singles, respectively while Akopyan won 6-3, 6-2 at fourth singles.
In the nightcap against St. Bonaventure, Amat and Choo won 6-0 at second doubles, while Akopyan and Akbas won at third doubles, 6-0. Schwarz and Comlek won 6-2 at first doubles.
Comlek played great again, notching the first singles point of the match, 6-3, 6-2 at second singles. Choo cruised to her second win of the day, taking her fourth singles match 6-4, 6-1 while senior Lolina Schietekat Sedas picked up her first singles win of the year at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-3. Akbas earned a hard-fought victory at first singles in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 and Amat rounded things out for UB, winning 7-6, 6-3 at fifth singles.
The Bulls return to action at the ITA Regionals, hosted by Dartmouth, September 30-October 3.
