Bulls To Celebrate History Of Buffalo During Hall Of Fame Weekend This Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's basketball teams will honor the history of Buffalo this weekend when they take the courts for Saturday's doubleheader. The women's team will be wearing special "Queen City" warmups and the men's team will be wearing alternate uniforms with the name "Nickel City" across the chest.
This is part of an already special weekend at Buffalo where the department will induct its newest Hall of Fame class on Friday night.
Buffalo was originally called the Queen City for being the largest and most prosperous cities along the Great Lakes in the end of the 1800's to the beginning of the 1900's, and it was at one point the second largest trade port in the North after New York City.
The Nickel City moniker comes as an ode to the Buffalo nickel or the Indian Head nickel, which was in production by the United States mint from 1913 to 1938. On the back of that rare coin is a bison, which was also referred to as the American Buffalo.
The department will be giving out 1,000 replicas of each shirt prior to the respective games on Saturday.
