Bulls Escape with Overtime Win Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Trailing by as much as 12, the University at Buffalo men's basketball program (16-11, 6-8 MAC) defeated the UMass Minutemen (15-13, 6-9 MAC) in overtime on Saturday, 86-62.
All of Buffalo starters finished with at least 10 points as Angelo Brizzi scored a game-high 27 points. Tim Oboh and Noah Batchelor each scored 15, as Oboh snatched a game-high nine rebounds. Derrick Talton Jr. scored 11 points to go with three steals.
Ryan Sabol recorded his first career double-double as he finished with 10 points and 10 assists, marking a career high. This was Buffalo's fourth double-double of the season and first since Dec. 20th.
The Bulls were outshot on the night, 51.7% to 48.1%, but they went 10-of-20 (50.0%) from three-point range.
Buffalo capitalized on points off turnovers and they finished +8 in the category.
Brizzi got the game started with a three to give the Bulls the 3-0 lead. Leading 10-7, the Minutemen went on to outscore the Bulls 23-8 as they led, 30-18. With the momentum favoring UMass, the Bulls weathered the storm as they slowly chipped away at the deficit to make it 34-29 at the half.
Buffalo seized the early momentum in the second half as they kept the game within reach. An Oboh layup cut UMass's lead down to one with 12:47 left at 42-41. On the next possession, UMass made it a three-point game, but Brizzi answered with a three to tie the game at 44 with 11:09 to go.
UMass quickly regained the lead, but the Bulls responded with Batchelor giving the Bulls their first lead since 13:29 in the first as he drilled a corner three. The Bulls got hot from three as they made three straight threes from Batchelor, Talton and Sabol. It was a one possession game the rest of the way in regulation. Trailing 65-68 with 2:15 left, the Bulls forced a turnover with 1:22 to go. Brizzi made it a two-point game as he made one of two free throws with 1:06 left to make it 68-66. With time dwindling, they forced another turnover which resulted in a fastbreak dunk by Kyle Jones to tie the game with 35 seconds remaining. The Minutemen went down the court in their last possession but was denied at the rim by Oboh. The Bulls called their final timeout with nine seconds left. With the ball in Brizzi's hands, he battled through contact as he attacked the rim, but the shot didn't fall.

It was all Buffalo the rest of the way as a driving Brizzi layup gave the Bulls a 70-69 lead. The extended their lead to as much as seven at 82-75, but the Minutemen did not back down. With 23 seconds left, they made it a three-point game as they banked a three with the shot clock expiring. Oboh iced the game as he made a pair of free throws with four seconds left as the Bulls came out victorious, 86-82.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday as they'll travel to Akron. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
