Bulls Fall at Akron
2/24/2026 10:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (16-12, 6-9 MAC) fell to the Akron Zips (23-5, 14-1 MAC) on Tuesday evening, 99-85.
Ryan Sabol scored a game-high 28 points as he drilled six three-pointers on the night. In doing so, he became the second Bull in program history to reach 100 made three-pointers in a single season. He now joins Zach Filzen's 2010-11 season when he finished with 110 threes. Sabol also added nine rebounds and a couple of steals.
Angelo Brizzi continues to surpass the 20-point mark as he tallied 23 points. He has now scored 20 points in three straight and in five of the last six games. Daniel Freitag returned to action, scoring 16 points.
It was a slow start for both squads at James A. Rhodes Arena as there were three turnovers in the first minute of play. Akron then got out to a 7-2 lead, but the Bulls defense turned stops into points as they utilized a 10-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. Trying to maintain the lead, the Zips were efficient on offense as they scored in four consecutive possessions to take a 21-20 lead at the halfway mark of the half. Both squads threw punches the rest of the way in the way in the half, but the last punch was crucial. Headed into the final possession of the first half, Akron had only made one three-pointer, but a step away three at the halftime horn extended their lead to 39-35 headed to the locker room.
The Bulls cut Akron's lead down to one possession three times before the Zips jumped out to their largest lead of the night at 82-57. The Zips got hot from deep as they went 7-of-8 in a stretch the Bulls couldn't overcome. Despite the deficit, Buffalo did not back down. Playing until the final whistle, they forced 17 Akron turnovers, their second-most this season. The Bulls outscored the Zips in points off turnovers, 27-22.
