Bulls Host Chippewas on Victor’s Mascot Mania Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (16-12, 6-9 MAC) will host the Central Michigan Chippewas (9-19, 5-10 MAC) on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off from Alumni Arena is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+. Josh Whetzel and Bob Gaughan will be on the radio call on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280 and on the Varsity Network App.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming off a 99-85 loss at Akron on Tuesday. Ryan Sabol led the Bulls with 26 points and nine rebounds. This marked the first time in his career he led the team in both points and rebounds. He eclipsed the 500-point mark on the season becoming the first Bull to do so in three seasons. Angelo Brizzi continued his dominance has he scored 25 points. Daniel Freitag returned to the lineup where he added 16 points including making all 10 of his free throw attempts.
After six made threes at Akron on Tuesday, Ryan Sabol became the second Bull in program history to make 100 threes in a single season. He joined Zach Filzen's 2010-11 season where he made 110 threes.
ABOUT THE CHIPPEWAS
• Central Michigan Head Coach Andy Bronkema is in his first season with the Chippewas where he's led them to a 9-19 (.321) overall record. Prior to his time in Mount Pleasant, he spent 12 seasons at Ferris State from 2013-25. He racked up a 279-105 (.727) overall record with the Bulldogs. He led Ferris State four Division II National Titles in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2024.
• The Chippewas were selected 12th in the 13-team league in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll with 31 points.
• The Chippewas are led by Tamario Adley (12.6 ppg) and Nathan Claerbaut (12.3 ppg & 5.7 ppg).
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
• Daniel Freitag is the first Bull to make 150+ free throws in a single season since Justin Moss made 173 in 2014-15. Freitag is currently eighth in program history for most free throws made with 158.
• With three more assists, Ryan Sabol will be the first Bull to record a 500-point, 100-assist season since CJ Massinburg in 2018-19. Massinburg earned MAC Player of the Year and First-Team All-MAC honors that season.
• Ryan Sabol is the first Bull to record back-to-back 400-point seasons since Jeenathan Williams did so from 2020-22.20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games.
• Angelo Brizzi recorded Buffalo's first 50-steal season since Zid Powell did so in 2022-23 when he finished with 53. Brizzi has 51 steals on the season.
• Tim Oboh is fourth in the MAC in blocks per game with 1.7 during conference play. His 25 total blocks is fifth.
• For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Bulls have three players with 80+ assists each. Ryan Sabol leads the way with 97 as Derrick Talton Jr. has 91 with Daniel Freitag adding 88 assists.
• Angelo Brizzi has led the Bulls in scoring in four of the last six games where he's averaged 23.7 ppg, good for the best average and point total (142) in the MAC in that span.
• UB has made 271 three-pointers so far this season. 36.8% of their points have come from three-point range, the top mark in the MAC ahead of Akron's 36.0%.
• UB has recorded 34 20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games. This is the most 20-point games since they recorded 37 in 2018-19.
