BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (14-9, 4-7 MAC) nearly pulled off the upset over the unbeaten #23 Miami (OH) RedHawks (23-0, 11-0 MAC) on Tuesday night in front of a packed Alumni Arena. Coming down to the last shot, the RedHawks managed to come out with the 73-71 win.
Angelo Brizzi led the Bulls with 22 points as Daniel Freitag added 18 points and seven assists. Tim Oboh had a game-high eight rebounds to go with seven points.
The Bulls hung with the RedHawks despite shooting 42.1% from the floor to Miami's 55.2%.
Buffalo took advantage from the charity stripe as they finished 14-of-18. The RedHawks converted on half of their six attempts from the line.
Buffalo's defensive intensity allowed just 73 points to the highest scoring team in the country. Miami entered tonight's contest averaging 93.7 points per game.
The first half was a seesaw battle, with Miami building a slim 38-35 lead at the half. Buffalo struck first, as an Oboh free throw put them in front, 1-0. Miami quickly responded as they took a 9-3 lead at the 16:11 mark of the first half. The Bulls fought back, tying the game at 18-18 as Brizzi drilled a triple. A few minutes later Brizzi put the Bulls in front, 26-25, after a free throw. Prior to halftime, Oboh made a contested layup with 42 seconds remaining, to cut Miami's lead to 36-35. In the ensuing possession, the RedHawks extended their lead to three as a jumper in the paint put them in front 38-35.
Brizzi stayed hot to start the second half as he made a layup to cut Miami's lead back to one. A lull by the Bulls offense allowed the RedHawks to go on their largest run of the evening. A 10-0 run over just a 1:36 span forced the Bulls to call a timeout. Going back to the first half, Miami was 7-of-8 from the floor in that stretch. Now trailing, 48-37, the Bulls had an uphill battle to climb. The Bulls mounted the comeback as they countered with a 9-2 spurt, highlighted by an Oboh dunk and a Sabol three-pointer, narrowing it to 52-49 with 12:38 to go.
The RedHawks led 60-52 with 9:25 remaining, but a 7-2 run by Freitag followed by a Brizzi three tied the game at 62 with 6:39 to play. Points were hard to come by down the stretch, but a vicious dunk by Brizzi with 80 seconds left erupted the Alumni Arena crowd to make it a 72-68 Miami lead. The RedHawks added a point as they went 1-of-2 from the line, but a Noah Batchelor three-pointer from the top of the arc gave the Bulls life with 12 seconds left. On the inbounds, the Bulls fouled Miami to send them to the line for a 1-and-1. After missing the first free throw, the Bulls grabbed the rebound and dished it off to Sabol up the court. With time dwindling, Sabol attempted a corner three for the win, but it went off the front of the rim as the Bulls fell just short of handing Miami their first loss of the season.
