Bulls Travel Down the Heart of Dixie to Face the South Alabama Jaguars

MOBILE, Ala. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (14-9, 4-7 MAC) will travel to the state of Alabama to face the South Alabama Jaguars (##-#, 7-4 SBC) for the second game of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge on Saturday evening. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT from the Mitchell Center. The action can be seen on ESPN+ as Josh Whetzel will be on the radio call on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280 and on the Varsity Network App.
This will be the second time the Bulls and Jaguars will face one another in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. In the inaugural game, the Jaguars visited Buffalo on Nov. 11, 2023. South Alabama came away with the 70-56 win.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming off a near upset win over #23 Miami (OH) on Tuesday evening. The RedHawks managed to escape Alumni Arena with a 73-71 win. In the loss, Angelo Brizzi led the Bulls in scoring for the first time in five games, also against Miami, with 22 points. He added a game-high three steals. Daniel Freitag finished with 18 points and game-high seven assists. Tim Oboh added seven points to go with eight boards.
ABOUT THE JAGUARS
• South Alabama Head Coach Richie Riley has spent the last eight seasons with the Jaguars where he's led them to a 147-101 (.593) overall record. Prior to his time in Mobile, he spent fa pair of seasons at Nicholls from 2016-18. In his career, he holds an overall record of 182-129 (.585).
• The Jaguars were selected third in the 14-team league in the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Poll, including four first place votes. John Broom was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Third Team. Last season, Broom averaged 9.0 ppg and 2.6 rpg.
• The Jaguars' zone defense has been lethal this season. They're forcing their opponents to shoot 37.7% from the field, the fourth-best mark in the college hoops.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
• This will be Buffalo's seventh game in program history to be played in Alabama. In their previous six meetings, they're 1-5. Their lone win came against Samford on Dec. 30, 1971, in a 78-63 decision. Their last game in the state of Alabama was on Feb. 6, 1997, where they lost to Troy, 83-74. Both Troy and Buffalo were members of the Mid-Continent Conference, now known as the Summit League.
• The Bulls have been one of the best three-point shooting teams this season. On the season, Buffalo has 17 games with a three-point percentage of at least .370, the most in Division I hoops. Belmont, Liberty, Cleveland State, Denver, Incarnate Word and Sacred Heart have done so 16 times.
• Dating back to 2004-05 on available records, this is the first time the Bulls have had six 30-point performances in a single season as Daniel Freitag has done so four times as Ryan Sabol has done it twice this season. The 2012-13 squad finished with five such performances. Over the last three previous seasons, Buffalo only had four 30-point performances.
• Ryan Sabol is five points shy of tying Ronaldo Segu (2018-22) for 19th all-time in program history with 1,115 points. Also reaching milestones are Ezra McKenna and Mikhail Pocknett. The former is a point away from 1,700 career points as the latter is two points shy of 1,300.
• UB has made 219 three-pointers so far this season. 35.8% of their points have come from three-point range, the second-best mark in the MAC behind Akron's 36.5%.
• UB has recorded 26 20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games.
• Daniel Freitag leads the MAC in free throw makes and attempts with 148 and 181, respectfully. He's top-15 in the country in both categories.
• The Bulls are 10-10 all-time in games played on Feb. 7th. Buffalo's last 100-point regulation game against a Division I opponent was on this date in 2023 against Eastern Michigan. The Bulls won, 102-97.
• Ryan Sabol recorded his 16th game of his career with five or more three-pointers in a single game against Bowling Green last Tuesday night. He has 39 games with at least three three-pointers in his time in the blue and white. Sabol is four threes shy of tying Mike Martinho's 1997-98 season 82 made threes for 10th in program history for threes made in a single season.
• Four Bulls have combined to score over 5,700 points in their collegiate careers. Ezra McKenna leads the way with 1,699 points as his fellow NAIA transfer in Derrick Talton Jr. has 1,646 points. Mikhail Pocknett is approaching the 1,300-point mark as he's sitting with 1,298 points. Ryan Sabol has 1,110 points, all of which coming in the blue and white.
