BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (11-1-2, 5-0-2 MAC) extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games as they defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies 1-0 at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
The 11-game unbeaten streak is the third-longest in program history, trailing only the 1999 (12) and 2014 (14) squads. It was also the 10th shutout victory of the year for the Bulls, which is tied for third-most in a single season in program history.
The Bulls created scoring opportunities in the early going as Alya Ruken made a great run in the seventh minute and fired a shot, but it sailed wide right. A few minutes later, Jasmine Guerber had a great look from point blank range, but Sadie McGill made a good save.
Buffalo continued to attack as Hannah Callaghan recorded a pair of shots in the 20th minute that sailed off target and later in the 25th minute Guerber made another good run and drilled a shot on net, but McGill made a great save and the game remained scoreless at the break.
The Bulls stayed aggressive early in the second half as Guerber had a good shot in the 54th minute that was turned away but the Huskies defense and then later in the 58th minute the sophomore drilled a shot on net that clanged off the top crossbar and out of play.
Buffalo broke through in the 70th minute as Callaghan found Ellie Simmons and she played a beautiful ball to Marissa Foster who drilled a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for her first career goal to give UB a 1-0 lead and that would be enough as the Bulls withstood a pair of late NIU runs to hold on for the victory.
The Bulls have now had 10 different players record a goal this season. Buffalo dominated possession for most of the game as they held a 20-7 advantage in total shots, including 5-3 edge in shots on goal, and recorded nine corner kick opportunities on the night. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly made three saves for UB while McGill and Deighton Wamer combined for four saves for Northern Illinois. Callaghan was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her efforts in the shutout victory.
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, October 16 as they travel to Bowling Green for a clash with the Falcons. Kickoff from Cochrane Stadium is set for 1pm.
