BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team took the courts for one final time in the 2021 spring season and the Bulls made the most of their opportunity, defeating Binghamton 7-0 at UB Tennis Courts.
The Bulls got out to the quick start with a victory in doubles, picking up wins at two and three. Bjoern Petersen and Greg Hastings came away with the 6-0 sweep at second doubles, while the freshmen pair of Tom Owen and Finn Macnamara won 6-0 at third doubles.
In singles action, the Bulls won all six matches in straight sets. Macnamara picked up the first victory with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles and Hastings followed that up with a 6-0, 6-2 win at five. Senior Valdemar Holm clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles, the first of three straight wins from seniors.
Peterson scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory at first singles, while Matthew Johnson won 6-4, 6-2 at third singles. Owen completed the sweep at sixth singles as he won 6-2, 6-4.
"Today turned out to be a wonderful way for our three seniors to finish their careers," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Valdemar, Bjoern, and Matthew all had tremendous obstacles thrown in their way throughout their careers, but they each taught the team and coaching staff how to face adversity with tenacity and heart. I would give anything to see how this year would have played out with a full schedule, but we are going into the summer with high hopes and on a high note. We thank our administration, our support staff, and all University personnel who worked tirelessly to give us an opportunity to compete this year. We truly feel lucky to be a Bull!!"
This marks the first time since 1994-95 that the Bulls will end the season on a win.
