BATON ROUGE, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team showed a lot of promise against a pair of nationally ranked opponents as they concluded play the ULL/LSU Invitational on Saturday. The Bulls fell 6-3 to #10 Oklahoma State before dropping the night cap at #11 LSU, 7-1.
In game one, the Bulls led off the bottom of the first inning with singles by Brianna Castro, Alicia Peters and Anna Aguon to load the bases and Alexis Matheney would draw a bases loaded walk to cut the Oklahoma State lead to 2-1 but the Bulls would leave the bases juiced to end the inning.
Later, trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulls drew a pair of walks with two outs but they would be unable to plate a run. Buffalo made one last effort at a comeback in the bottom of the sixth as Peters and Matheney singled, Alexis Lucyshyn reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Jenna Richmond came up big with a pinch hit RBI single. Madison Fernimen then drew a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 6-3 but that would be all the Bulls would get as UB left the bases loaded and that would prove to be costly as they were unable to score in the final inning of play.
Sophomore Madelyn Hickingbottom gave up six runs on 10 hits while striking out two batters in five innings of work. Freshman Julia Tarantino pitched two innings of scoreless relief for UB.
In game two, it was Peters who provided the fireworks early for the Bulls as she smashed a solo home run to left field to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the second.
LSU threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth but the Tigers were only able to muster a sacrifice fly RBI as Ally Marcano escaped the jam to keep the LSU lead at 3-1. LSU applied the pressure again in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third with one out but Marcano and the UB defense came up big once again, recording back-to-back outs to end the inning.
The Tigers would finally get to Marcano in the bottom of the sixth as they scored four runs on four hits to take a 7-1 lead and that would be all they would need to secure the victory.
Marcano proved she will be a force for the Bulls in the circle this season, allowing seven runs on 11 hits while striking out two in six innings of work.
The Bulls return to action March 5-7 at the North Florida/Jacksonville Tournament.
