BUFFALO, NY – Head men's tennis coach Lee Nickell has announced the promotion of Tony Miller to associate head coach. Miller has served on the UB staff since his graduation in 2017.
Last season, Miller was an assistant coach for a Buffalo squad that finished 6-1 in Mid-American Conference play, earning a number two seed in the MAC Tournament. Buffalo finished the season ranked eighth in the Northeast region and senior Ethan Nittolo finished the year regionally ranked in singles. During the year, Miller helped three UB players earn All-MAC honors and guided the team to their first ever win over Ivy League foe, Harvard.
"There is no one more deserving of this title than Tony Miller," said Nickell. "As a player/captain he led our program to three MAC Titles and two NCAA appearances. As an assistant he has been a part of some of our greatest victories and has helped push us to the next level. He is a bright young coach with a great future in this industry, and I am excited to continue to watch him shine for our department."
Prior to his season as assistant coach, Miller spent the 2017-18 year as a volunteer assistant. Miller played for the Bulls for three seasons and holds the distinction of being the only UB men's tennis player to be a part of both NCAA Tournament teams (2015 & 2017).
During his senior season, Miller excelled in doubles with Nittolo as the pair went 12-7 at third doubles. Miller also won his lone singles match of the year, scoring a 7-5, 6-1 win against Quinnipiac at sixth singles. He was named an Academic All-MAC selection following his senior year.
"Being named associate head coach at such a special time in our athletic department is an incredible honor," said Miller. "Since joining the Bulls, I've had the privilege to work alongside some of the best student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and athletic support staffs in the country. I would like to thank President Tripathi, Mark Alnutt, and all others involved in this process and a special thank you to Lee Nickell for this opportunity, and challenging me to continually grow my knowledge of the sport. His trust in my professional ability to make a positive impact on student-athletes on this prestigious stage is humbling. Our vision becomes clearer every day as we continue to push this program towards greater success."
Miller graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2017 with a degree in Communications.
