BUFFALO, NY – A trio of University at Buffalo softball players were honored on Tuesday afternoon as the Mid-American Conference announced its postseason awards. Sophomore Ally Power was named to the All-MAC Second Team, while Jenelle Martinez and Jessica Goldyn each earned All-Freshman Team honors.
Power earned the Utility/Pitcher spot on the second team as she saw action in both the circle and in the outfield for the Bulls. Power made 26 appearances in the circle, including 19 starts and 11 complete games. She had a 3.27 ERA and struck out 95 batters, all team-highs for UB this past season. She struck out 11 batters on Apr. 4 in a 6.0 inning performance against Akron and struck out 10 earlier this year against George Mason.
In all, Power appeared in 43 games, also seeing action in left and center field. She hit her first home run back in February in a 7-0 win over Hartford. She went 4-for-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles in a 13-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's and she had the walk-off single in extra innings of a 4-3 win over Western Michigan on Apr. 9.
The Bulls had just two players that played in all 55 games this season and both were freshmen who were named to the league's All-Freshman team in Martinez and Goldyn. Martinez played and started in all 55 games as she batted .263 with 42 hits, nine doubles, two triples and two home runs. She led the Bulls with 16 runs batted in. Martinez went 3-for-4 against Ohio and went 1-for-2 with a solo home run against Niagara. She also hit a home run earlier this year at Memphis. In all, Martinez had six multi-hit games. Her 110 assists in the field are third most in a single season.
Goldyn played in 55 games, making 52 starts. She hit .289, leading the Bulls with 44 hits, while finishing second on the team with 15 runs batted in. Goldyn was a terror on the base paths as she went 23-of-26 in stolen base attempts. The 23 stolen bases are second in school history for steals in a season. Goldyn had 13 multi-hit games, including a game-winning inside the park home run last week against Niagara. Behind the plate she threw out 18 runners this past season.
While Power is the first All-MAC Second Team selection for the Bulls since 2013, this marks the third straight year that the Bulls have placed at least one player on the All-MAC Freshman Team and the first time ever that two UB players are on the team in the same year.
