BUFFALO, NY – UB men's tennis looks to defend their 2015 MAC Championship as they compete in the 2016 MAC Championship as the No. 2 seed. This year's tournament is the Bulls' 18th-straight MAC Championship appearance.
Western Michigan is the one seed after going 6-1 in MAC play. Their lone loss came against Binghamton. The two through four seeds were decided via tiebreaker after Ball State, Binghamton, and Buffalo finished tied for second with a 4-3 MAC record.
The tie was broken by comparing the head-to-head records between the tied teams. Buffalo was 2-1 against Ball State and Binghamton, Ball State was 1-1 against Binghamton and Buffalo, and Binghamton was 0-2 against Ball State and Buffalo. As a result Buffalo is the two seed, Ball State is the three seed, and Binghamton is the four seed.
Ball State narrowly beat Buffalo, 4-3, when the two teams last faced each other on April 15. After winning the doubles point, the Cardinals earned victories at one, five, and sixth singles to secure the conference win. Buffalo earned three wins at second, third, and fourth singles in the tight 4-3 loss.
Buffalo is led by four seniors, Pablo Alvarez, Sergio Arevalillo, Amar Hromic, and Akhil Mehta, who have a combined 44 singles wins during the Spring season. Arevalillo is undefeated in MAC singles play this Spring as well.
Friday's semifinals match begins at 3:00 pm ET if the match is played outside as scheduled. No. 1 Western and No. 4 Binghamton play in the first semifinals match of the day at 11:00 a.m. ET. The winners of each semifinals match will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
