Bulls Down Bryant And UConn To Cap Off Weekend

STORRS, CT – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's tennis team completed a stellar weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Bryant and a 4-1 victory over the host UConn Huskies. The weekend format was played as a 4:1 meaning that each match had four singles matches and one doubles contest.
The Bulls opened competition on Sunday by winning all five matches against Bryant, a team that won their conference last season. Sophomore Tanja Stojanovska and freshman Chantal Martinez Blanco won their doubles contest, 6-2, 6-3, while the Bulls also claimed all four singles matches.
Junior Margarita Kotok won 6-1, 4-6, 12-10, while Laura Holterbosch took her match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Sanjana Sudhir won her contest, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, while classmate Mercedes Losada Rubio also won in a super tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
In the afternoon match against UConn, the Bulls took the doubles contest as Kotok and senior Dayana Agasieva won their match, 6-4, 6-1. Stojanovska won her singles match 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, while Martinez Blanco overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set to win her match, 2-6, 6-3, 10-2. UConn did win the contest at third singles, but Sudhir won her match in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-4, which gave the Bulls the 4-1 victory.
"I am so proud of the way that we played as a group this entire weekend and I don't think we could have asked for a better start to the year," said head coach Kristen Maines. "The more tennis we played, the higher the level of competition we faced ending with UConn this afternoon and all of our girls really stepped their game up."
The Bulls will return home now for their next three matches, beginning on Friday evening vs. Duquesne. The match will begin at 7pm and will be played at the Miller Tennis Center.
