
UB prepares for duo of Ivy League foes

BUFFALO, NY – UB men's tennis team returns to the court this weekend after opening their season with a 5-2 win over Bryant University and a 6-1 loss to No. 42 Dartmouth. The Bulls will face No. 47 Cornell University on Friday at 1:00 p.m. before traveling to face fellow Ivy League member Brown. Sunday's match is currently scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Last time against Cornell
UB and Cornell faced off last year on March 22 with the then 52nd-ranked Big Red coming away victorious 7-0. Despite the crushing loss, Sergio Arevalillo forced three sets against Dylan Brown in the No. 6 singles match before falling in the super tiebreaker, 10-4. The Bulls last beat Cornell on January 19, 2014 with a 4-3 result.
Last time against Brown
The Bulls last played Brown on March 7, 2015 where they fell, 6-1, to the then-49th ranked side. Jonathan Hannestad won 6-2, 7-5 against Aaron Sanberg in No. 6 singles. In other singles matches the team fought hard but all lost in two sets in their respective matches.
Scouting Cornell
Cornell kicks off their 2016 Spring season against Buffalo on Friday. Last season, the Big Red went 12-8 overall and 4-3 in Ivy League play. The Bulls faced many of Cornell's players at various tournaments during the Fall portion of the 2015-16 season. Freshman David Volfson, juniors Colin Sinclair and Chris Vrabel, and senior Stefan Vinti all earned rankings within the ITA Northeast Region.
Scouting Brown
The Bears are led by No. 10 Northeast Region double duo, Greg Garcia and Peter Tarwid, this season. They won their first No. 1 doubles match on Monday with a 6-3 result over William and Mary's Ryan Newman and Tristan Bautil. Brown went on to win their first match of the season, 5-2.
Scouting Buffalo
Coming of their 2015 season that saw them win the MAC Championship and earn the program's first NCAA berth, the Bulls begin their second weekend of action in 2016. They are currently 1-1 overall after falling to Dartmouth despite dropping some close matches and beating Bryant handedly 5-2 last Sunday.
This year the Bulls return a majority of their roster headlined by seniors Pablo Alvarez, Sergio Arevalillo, Amar Hromic, and Akhil Mehta. Tony Miller and Ethan Nittolo had strong performances throughout the individual tournaments in the Fall. Artur Culicovschi joined the Bulls before the Spring season and has played in one singles match so far this season.
