BUFFALO, NY - Junior Damien David of the men's tennis team was named the Mid-American Conference's Singles Player of the Week after leading the team to two 4-3 wins over the weekend. It is his first weekly honor of the season, but he becomes the third UB athlete honored as a singles player of the week and he earns the team's fourth weekly honor of the season.
David had arguably his best weekend of tennis all season, grinding out a pair of crucial wins at number one singles to help the Bulls sweep their final home weekend of the 2014 Spring season. He started Friday night with a shootout against Binghamton's Sid Hazarika. After taking the first set 7-5, he would drop the second but rallied back to win the third to clinch the 4-3 win for Buffalo thanks to a commanding 6-3 win in the deciding set.
That hard-fought win would prepare him for his biggest match of the season, coming against Western Michigan's Nadin Indre. The two exchanged blowouts in the first two sets, with David winning 6-3 in the first but losing the second 2-6. With Buffalo down 3-2 in the team score, he would win the third set 7-5 just minutes before his teammate Sebastian Ionescu would win the deciding match at second singles in Buffalo's 4-3 win. The team is now 11-5 this season and 1-1 in the MAC.
The team has a weekend off before its final duals of the regular season. It will face Northern Illinois on April 18 and Ball State on April 20, both on the road.
