NEW HAVEN, CT – The State University of New York, Buffalo women's tennis team won three of four matches played Saturday at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional hosted by Yale at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Freshman Tanja Stojanovska posted back-to-back singles victories to earn a spot in the round of 32 on Sunday. Sophomore Margarita Kotok won her first-round match, but suffered a loss in the round of 64.
Stojanovska used a come-from-behind performance to defeat Rutgers' Lindsey Kayati, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the morning. She went on to outlast Monica Lin of Harvard, 7-6 (3) in the first, before upending her, 6-2 in the second set, to snap Lin's three-match winning streak. Lin is ranked 12th in the Northeast Region. Stojanovska has won six consecutive singles matches.
"Today we played at a very high level," said assistant coach Smaranda Stan. "I'm extremely proud of how smart and composed Tanja (Stojanovska) played today against a very strong opponent."
Kotok opened singles play blanking Shivani Patel of St. Francis (PA), 6-3, 6-0, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Columbia's Tina Jiang in the second round.
Stojanovska will face Syracuse's Amanda Rodgers in the round of 32 Sunday at 10 am. Kotok will enter the consolation bracket. Watch live via Yale's free webcast.
