Bulls Split Action in Rhode Island
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team split the weekend matches in Rhode Island as the Bulls dropped a 5-2 decision to Brown on Saturday and rebounded with a 5-2 win at Bryant on Sunday. Combined with the spring opening loss at Cornell, the Bulls are 1-2 thus far for the spring season.
Hove Enjoys Undefeated Week
Junior Vusa Hove went 4-0 on the weekend as he swept both of his singles matches and teamed with Wojciech Starakiewicz for a pair of doubles triumphs. Playing third singles, Hove defeated Brown's Mike Hill, 6-4, 6-0, and then followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ernesto Arguello of Bryant on Sunday. Hove and Starakiewicz also formed UB's top doubles tandem of the duo defeated Soufiane Azargui and Michael Reichmann of Brown, 8-6. They also downed Bryant's Juan Gonzalez-Paz and Arguello, 8-6. Hove is tied for second on the team with seven singles wins and tied for the team lead with seven doubles triumphs this year.
David Reaches Ladder's Top Rung
Freshman Damien David has stepped into the number one singles slot for the Bulls this spring after an impressive fall campaign where he won two singles flight championships. David scored a pair of singles wins over the weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Brown's Brandon Burke on Saturday and then downed Bryant's Peter Hart Callahan, 6-1, 6-1. David also teamed with Alex Kalinin for an 8-1 third doubles victory over Bryant's Dana Parziale and Richard Sipala.
Tibil Returns to the Lineup
Junior George Tibil returned to the Bulls' lineup for the spring season after missing the entire fall due to injury. Tibil stepped back into the fourth singles slot and picked up his first victory of the season on Sunday with a three-set win over Bryant's Dana Parziale, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
A Nickell's Worth
Head coach Lee Nickell was excited to get the first victory of the season on Sunday at Bryant and hopes the team can get its footing as the calendar turns to February. "It feels good to be on the winning side of things again," said Nickell. "We obviously aren't in mid-season form yet and still have a lot to do. Bryant has improved immensely in the last three years and we are very proud to get out of here with the win."
Bulls Rest Up Before Tangling With Nittany Lions
The Bulls are idle this weekend but travel to Penn State on Sunday, February 11 for their next action. The Nittany Lions opened the spring with a 6-1 loss at North Carolina State on January 22 but returned home to open a nine-match homestand this past weekend scoring 7-0 wins over St. Bonaventure and Lehigh. PSU entertains Princeton on February 1 and Virginia Tech and Bloomsburg on February 4 before the Bulls face the Nittany Lions. UB dropped a 5-2 decision to Penn State in last season's meeting on February 13, 2011 as Wojciech Starakiewicz, at number one, and Jason Simon, at number five, scored victories.
