Bulls Roll By Local Rivals
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team picked up a pair of non-conference wins over local rivals St. Bonaventure and Niagara as the Bulls completed their regular season road slate. The Bulls rolled to 7-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon against the Bonnies, and picked up a 6-1 win over Niagara on Thursday.
Simon Says
Freshman Jason Simon is on a five-match winning streak and has not lost in the month of April. Simon, who joined the team at the beginning of the second semester after transferring from Oklahoma where he did not see action, scored straight set wins over his St. Bonaventure and Niagara opponents last week. Having won five in a row, Simon should actually have a sixth win in the string as his match against Chicago State with him a game away from clinching another triumph. Simon is 9-3 in singles play this season.
Easter Eggs Laid Against Eagles
In UB's 6-1 win at Niagara on Thursday, three Bulls scored at least one 6-0 shutout on their opponents. Travis Zappia, at fifth singles, shut out Mathieu Lacasse, 6-0, 6-0. Jason Simon, at third singles, won his first set over Joseph Zelic, 6-0, on his way to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. After splitting the opening two sets against Brandon Gallegos, Vusa Hove secured his team-leading 18th singles win with a 6-0 third-set victory.
Homestand Concludes Regular Season
The Bulls finish the 2011 regular season with home matches against Ball State on Good Friday and Northern Illinois on Easter Sunday. Both matches are slated for 1:00 pm starts. The Bulls knocked off both the Cardinals and Huskies in last year's regular season meetings en route to an undefeated 5-0 league mark. Ball State (11-9, 2-2) were swept by Western Michigan on Saturday but rebounded for a 7-0 sweep of Chicago State on Sunday. Northern Illinois (11-14, 1-3) traveled to Toledo and Cleveland State over the weekend. The Huskies were swept by the Rockets, 7-0, then fell to the Vikings by a 4-3 margin.
A Nickell's Worth
Head coach Lee Nickell commented on his teams prospects for the weekend matches against Ball State and Northern Illinois. "We have a good bit of momentum going into the matches this upcoming weekend. We are a different team than we were a month ago, and we look forward to facing two good MAC teams on our home courts," said Nickell. "We are also looking forward to celebrating the great careers of Marcelo Mazzetto and Mitch Zenaty who have meant so much to the program."
