Bulls Split Matches to Remain at .500
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team split their weekend matches as the Bulls fell at Binghamton, 6-1, on Saturday before returning home to defeat Chicago State, 5-0, in a Mid-American Conference matchup. The Bulls are now 7-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Simon Scores Lone Win Against Bearcats
In the Binghamton match, UB scored a singles victory as freshman Jason Simon picked up a super-tiebreaker win over Ruben Haggai. Simon won the super-tiebreaker 10-7 after winning the opening set by a 6-4 count. Haggai won the second set, 6-2. Simon improved to 7-3 in singles play since joining the squad at the beginning of the second semester.
Shkodnik Scores "Double Bagel" As Bulls Sweep Cougars
The Bulls returned home for their Sunday win over Chicago State in a contest that had been rescheduled following a weather postponement in February. After jumping out to quick doubles lead, the Bulls picked up wins at the bottom four singles slots. Jason Shkodnik scored a "double-bagel" win in the fourth singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dave Regus while Alex Kalinin, at number three, allowed just one game against him in his 6-1, 6-0 win over Viet Lam.
Outdoor Play Halted by Shower
With temperatures in the 50s on Sunday, the Bulls played their first home match outdoors at the University Tennis Center. Although the Bulls were able to beat the Cougars, they were unable to beat the raindrops. Two matches were stopped just short of completion by a quick shower. Both Vusa Hove, at number one, and Jason Simon, at number two, had big second set leads after winning their first sets when play was halted. Hove and Simon were playing in the slots for the first time this season as UB head coach Lee Nickell adjusted his singles lineup against Chicago State's depleted roster.
A Nickell's Worth
Following the Chicago State match, head coach Lee Nickell summed up the weekend play. "We're happy to get back to .500 and get a win in the MAC," said Nickell. "We started really well and that was our goal. We're looking forward to our matches at St. Bonaventure and Niagara."
Local Rivals on This Week's Schedule
Two local rivals are on this week's schedule as the Bulls will travel to St. Bonaventure for a match on Tuesday afternoon and Niagara on Thursday afternoon. The Bonnies are 8-9 and have won their last four contests, including a 6-1 win at Niagara on April 5. The Purple Eagles are 2-13 on the season having dropped their last three contests. The Bulls hold large leads in the all-time series with both teams. Against St. Bonaventure, UB is 37-19 while the Bulls are 96-3-1 against Niagara, the most victories against any all-time opponent.
